About this trip
This is the classic 15-day trek to the foot of the world's highest mountain, on trails through the Khumbu region that have drawn walkers here for decades. You fly into Lukla, then walk, day by day, gaining altitude through pine and rhododendron forest, Sherpa villages and increasingly stark high-mountain terrain.
The pace is steady rather than rushed, with rest days built in to help you acclimatise properly. Namche Bazaar, the main trade hub of the region, is your base for one of these, before the trail pushes on toward Tengboche and eventually Base Camp itself.
Beyond the mountains, the trek is also about the Khumbu's Sherpa communities — their villages, monasteries and way of life along the route, and the hospitality that comes with staying in local teahouses.
What you'll do
- Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla to start the trek
- Acclimatise in Namche Bazaar, the region's trade centre
- Walk through rhododendron and pine forest to Tengboche monastery
- Reach Everest Base Camp itself
- Climb Kala Patthar for panoramic views of Everest, Nuptse and Ama Dablam
- See the Khumbu glacier and its glacial lakes
- This is a high-altitude trek with rest days for acclimatisation — fitness and a steady pace matter more than speed
- Best conditions are mid-September to May, with stable, mild-warm days and cold nights from September to December
- Accommodation and culture along the way centre on Sherpa villages and teahouses
Worth it if you want a well-organised trek with genuinely attentive guides and porters who manage group pace carefully. Think twice if you need fluent English-speaking guides or expect luxury accommodation.
- Guides consistently book better rooms ahead and manage mixed-pace groups so no one feels rushed.
- Staff go beyond basics: guides check oxygen levels, monitor altitude sickness, entertain with stories and singing.
- English proficiency varies among guides; some travellers noted language barriers despite guides being knowledgeable.
- Off-season trips see reduced meal options at lodges, though portions remain generous.
