About this trip
This trek takes you into the heart of the Annapurna massif, walking from the lowland villages near Nayapul right up to Annapurna Base Camp, with Machhapuchhare's dramatic fishtail peak as a constant companion.
You climb steadily through changing landscapes, from stone-step trails and waterfalls near Ulleri to bamboo forests and Nepal's largest rhododendron forest, before reaching the open, glacier-carved bowl of the Sanctuary itself.
Along the way you pass through Gurung villages and get a genuine sense of daily mountain life, alongside sweeping views that build day by day until you're standing among some of the highest peaks in the Annapurna range.
What you'll do
- Trek from Nayapul through Tikhedhunga and Ulleri on traditional stone-step trails
- Take in sunrise views over the Himalaya from Poon Hill
- Walk through Nepal's largest rhododendron forest and dense bamboo groves
- Reach Machhapuchhare Base Camp beneath the sacred Fish-tail peak
- Arrive at Annapurna Base Camp surrounded by the Annapurna Sanctuary's peaks
- Pass through Gurung villages such as Sinuwa along the route
- A steady, multi-day ascent with daily walking rather than a single push to altitude
- Best undertaken September to November for clearer, more stable weather
- Suits families and groups looking for a classic, fully guided Himalayan trek
Worth it if you're reasonably fit and want expert local guidance in quieter seasons. Think twice if you need hand-holding on steep descents or expect warm temperatures.
- December–January off-season brings clear skies, quiet trails, and guides who know every best guesthouse and photo spot.
- Porters genuinely lighten the load; you trek focused on scenery rather than exhausted from carrying everything yourself.
- Route is physically demanding with steep downhills; clumsy or less confident hikers may struggle without constant guide support.
- Winter trekking means -15°C temperatures and possible heavy snow; beautiful but demanding, not a casual stroll.
