About this trip
This is a homestay in the truest sense: six days living alongside a nomadic family near the Amarbayasgalant Monastery in northern Mongolia.
You stay in a traditional ger on Otgonbat's family camp, on the banks of the Even River, taking part in the daily work of nomadic life rather than just observing it.
Expect hands-on chores over guided sightseeing — this is about slowing down and joining a household, not ticking off attractions.
What you'll do
- Herd horses, cows, goats or sheep with your host family
- Help cook traditional Mongolian meals and fetch water
- Stay in a guest ger on Otgonbat's family camp by the Even River
- Visit the Amarbayasgalant Monastery, home to more than 40 monks
- Get to know the host family, including their two children
- Accommodation is a shared ger, not a private room, so expect close quarters and basic facilities
- Partially guided — much of the experience depends on the daily rhythm of the host family rather than a set schedule
- Suited to travellers who want genuine rural immersion over comfort or structured itineraries
Cheapest live departure per day, in £, recorded by our tracker since 21 Jul. Never a brochure “was” price.

Worth it if you embrace basic living and want genuine family immersion. Think twice if you need structure, comfort or horseback experience.
- Hands-on daily tasks—milking cows, herding sheep, making dairy products—genuinely integrate you into nomadic family life.
- No shower facilities, toilet is a hole in the ground; guide communication about daily plans was vague and inconsistent.
- You stay stationary in one location; family absence left reviewers uncertain what to do, creating monotony mid-trip.
- Horses are wild and unsuitable for beginners; pack wet wipes, filter bottle, toilet paper and mosquito spray.
