About this trip
Nineteen days overland through four Central Asian countries, starting in Bishkek and finishing among the domes and markets of Bukhara. You move steadily west across Kyrgyzstan's high pastures and lakes, into Kazakhstan, down through Tajikistan and on into Uzbekistan.
The route mixes mountain nights under canvas or in yurts with city time in Almaty, Dushanbe, Khujand and Bukhara, so you get both the wide-open Tian Shan landscapes and the Silk Road towns.
It's a fully guided small-group trip with private rooms, easy-paced and family-friendly, built around a lot of road time between very different places.
What you'll do
- Camp by Issyk-Kul and take in the mountain dawns
- Ride horseback and stay in a yurt camp at Son-Kul or visit the Tash Rabat caravanserai, depending on season
- Walk beneath the red rock formations of Jeti-Ögüz
- Cross Charyn Canyon on the way to Almaty
- Spend time in Dushanbe and Khujand in Tajikistan
- End among Bukhara's markets, teahouses and domes
- Day 6 differs by season: Son-Kul Lake on summer departures (May–September), Tash Rabat on spring and autumn departures (March, April, October, November)
- Long overland itinerary crossing four countries, with plenty of driving days between stops
