About this trip
This is a serious high-altitude trek through the Everest region, taking in all three major passes — Kongma La, Cho La and Renjo La — rather than the standard single route to base camp. Expect long days at altitude, glacier crossings, and some of the most complete mountain scenery the Khumbu has to offer.
You start in Kathmandu before flying to Lukla and following the classic Everest Base Camp trail as far as Dingboche, then branching off into quieter, harder terrain. The route weaves between the Everest and Gokyo valleys, crossing three passes over 5,300m and taking in both Kalapatthar and the Gokyo Lakes along the way.
It suits experienced trekkers who want more than the standard base camp trip — this is physically demanding, with real exposure to altitude and glacier travel, and needs genuine fitness and mental readiness rather than just enthusiasm.
What you'll do
- Cross the three high passes: Kongma La (5,540m), Cho La (5,420m) and Renjo La (5,345m)
- Reach Everest Base Camp and climb Kalapatthar for the classic Everest view
- Explore the Gokyo Valley and its glacial lakes
- Walk the traditional Khumbu trail through rhododendron forest, monasteries and chortens
- Take the short scenic flight between Kathmandu and Lukla
- Spend time in Kathmandu's old town before heading into the mountains
- A demanding trek — expect long days, high altitude and glacier crossings, best suited to those with prior trekking experience
- Includes built-in acclimatisation stops, but you should still arrive reasonably fit
- Weather and pass conditions can affect the route, so some flexibility is needed
