About this trip
This trip runs the length of Vietnam, from Hanoi in the north down to Ho Chi Minh City in the south, taking in limestone karsts, old imperial history, colonial-era streets and the Mekong Delta along the way.
The pace is brisk and the transport varied: buses, a private car, a night train and a domestic flight all get used as you move between regions, with each stop bringing a different landscape and a different slice of Vietnamese history.
It's partially guided, so some days are structured tours and others give you room to explore Hoi An or Saigon on your own.
What you'll do
- Cruise past the limestone karsts of Halong Bay
- Explore the caves and rivers of Trang An and the old citadel at Hoa Lu
- Take the night train from Hanoi to Danang
- Wander Hoi An's old town and visit the Cham ruins at My Son
- Cruise the waterways of the Mekong Delta
- Descend into the Cu Chi Tunnels
- Fast-paced — you change base most nights and cover long distances by night train and flight
- Meals are mostly included but a few days are left open for you to sort your own food
- Partially guided, so some sections are led and others are independent
Worth it if you want comprehensive North-to-South coverage with reliable logistics and strong local guides. Think twice if you need consistent group cohesion or pristine hotels throughout.
- Local guides are genuinely knowledgeable and engaging; Halong Bay and Hoi An stand out as highlights.
- Tour Radar and on-ground coordinators (Chloe, Duyen, Lan) provide exceptional pre-trip and real-time communication.
- Different tour operators per city means inconsistent guide quality; one Hanoi guide was barely comprehensible and disengaged.
- Hotel standards vary sharply; some have filthy conditions, unwashed duvet covers, or require housekeeping reminders.
