About this trip

Seventeen days covering Vietnam from top to bottom, starting in the north and working your way down through mountains, coastline, old towns and river delta.

You'll spend time on the water in Halong Bay, walk through terraced hills in Sapa, wander lantern-lit streets in Hoi An, and see daily life unfold on the Mekong. It's a proper cross-country route rather than a single-region trip.

A fully guided group trip that suits anyone wanting a broad first look at Vietnam without having to plan the logistics themselves.

Route map for Discover Vietnam 17 Days 16 Nights From North to South
  1. Hoa Lu ancient capital – Tam Coc – Cycling 1 day ( Meals: B, L ) — Ninh Binh

You'll be picked up from the airport and transferred to your hotel in central Hanoi. Check-in isn't until 1pm, but after that the city is yours to explore at your own pace.

  2. Hanoi – Halong bay – Overnight on cruise ( Meals: B, L, D ) — Hanoi

A full day trip from Hanoi to Hoa Lu, the ancient capital from the 10th century under the Dinh and Le dynasties, followed by Tam Coc. You'll spend the afternoon cycling through the area, with lunch at a local restaurant and a chance to stretch your legs during the bus journey.

  3. Early pickup for the four-hour drive to Halong Bay. You'll board an overnight cruise, check into your cabin, have lunch, then visit Amazing Cave and hike Ti Tov island for views across the bay before returning to the boat for the night.

  4. Wake early to catch the sunrise over Halong Bay. After breakfast, you'll kayak among the limestone mountains to explore the bay independently, then enjoy brunch while cruising back to the harbour and the bus back to Hanoi, arriving mid-afternoon.

  5. Overnight sleeper bus to Sapa, arriving at 1pm. Your guide will show you around Sapa town, then you'll trek 12km through terrace rice fields to stay overnight in a homestay in either Lao Chai or Ta Van village.

  6. You can wake early to watch your host family cook breakfast and join them, then either trek further to nearby villages through bamboo forest or help with farmwork like harvesting. Return to Sapa town in the afternoon with free time to visit the local market before the evening bus back to Hanoi.

  7. Spend the day exploring Hanoi's Old Quarter on foot—visit Ho Chi Minh mausoleum, Temple of Literature, and Hoan Kiem Lake with Ngoc Son temple. In the evening you'll catch the night train to Hue, watching Vietnamese countryside pass by over twelve hours.

  8. You'll be picked up from the train and transferred to your hotel in Hue. The rest of the day is free to explore the ancient capital at your own pace.

  9. Hue – Hai Van giant Pass – Hoi An ( Meals: B ) — Hoi An

Your guide will take you through Hue's Imperial sites: the Royal Citadel, Forbidden City, Hue Royal Museum, and Thien Mu Pagoda, with a boat ride along the Perfume River. After lunch, you can visit King Minh Mang's and King Khai Dinh's tombs, the Conical Hat village, or Incense Making Village before returning to the hotel.

  10. Drive across the Hai Van Pass, stopping for photos of the dramatic valley and panoramic views. You'll arrive in Hoi An in the afternoon with free time to wander the ancient town, its lantern-lit streets, Pagoda bridge, and old houses.

  11. Head out to My Son, the 4th-15th century Chăm Pa Kingdom capital in a jungle setting. After crossing Cua Dai bridge with its river and mountain views, you'll watch a traditional dance performance, then walk the ruins while your guide explains the history.

  12. Cycle to a local farming village, stopping to photograph farmers in their fields and attempt water buffalo riding if you fancy it. You'll then take a boat through coconut-palm waterways to learn traditional fishing techniques using round nets, cast nets, and bamboo basket boats.

  13. Spend the morning in Hoi An's old town taking photos and shopping, then your driver will transfer you to Da Nang airport for your flight to Ho Chi Minh City. Another driver will pick you up at Tan Son Nhat airport and take you to your hotel.

  14. Head out early to My Tho on the Mekong River. You'll cruise past Dragon, Unicorn, Phoenix and Tortoise islands, stop at Unicorn Island to walk country lanes and taste tropical fruit, visit fruit plantations, and try a hand-rowed sampan through Thoi Son canal to explore family businesses and local life.
