About this trip
This 12-day overland trip runs from Windhoek through the north and south of Namibia, camping most nights with one break in a hotel bed at Swakopmund. It is a proper cross-section of the country — desert, coast, canyon and bush — covered by road over two long, winding legs.
The northern stretch takes you into Etosha National Park for game viewing, including a night at the Okaukuejo waterhole, and to Mt Etjo and Okonjati Nature Reserve, with a visit to a Himba community along the way. Heading south, you follow the Skeleton Coast down to Swakopmund, then push inland to the dunes of Sossusvlei, the old diamond town of Kolmanskop, and Fish River Canyon.
It is a trip built around distance and variety rather than lingering in one place, with camping as the default and a couple of comforts built in along the way.
What you'll do
- Night game viewing at the Okaukuejo waterhole in Etosha National Park
- Meet and spend time with a Himba community
- Drive the Skeleton Coast and see the seal colony at Cape Cross
- Explore the dunes at Sesriem and Sossusvlei, among the highest in the world
- Wander the crumbling colonial buildings of Luderitz and the ghost town of Kolmanskop
- Stand at the edge of Fish River Canyon and see the quiver trees
- Mostly camping, with a hotel stay in Swakopmund partway through
- Long driving days between stops as you cover both the northern and southern legs of the country
- Suits families and those happy with a camping-based, active pace
Worth it if you want diverse Namibian landscapes with genuinely skilled guides and group camaraderie. Think twice if you need luxury accommodation or solo downtime.
- Guides (Erastus, Cheelo, Steinner, Calisto) consistently praised for wildlife knowledge, driving skill, and personal insights without rushing.
- Covers exceptional range—Etosha, Skeleton Coast, Sossusvlei, Fish River Canyon, Kolmanskop—in 12 days without feeling time-pressured or hectic.
- Camp food quality stood out repeatedly; chefs (Bronie, Mr. Smith, Klugger) earned specific praise for balanced, nutritious, enjoyable meals daily.
- Camping in the wild is core experience; reviewers loved it, but not suitable if you need hotel beds or privacy from group.
