About this trip
This nine-day trek takes you into the Helambu region northeast of Kathmandu, starting from Sundarijal and moving through forest trails and Tamang villages rather than the busier Everest or Annapurna routes.
The walking is moderate rather than extreme, through rhododendron forest and river valleys, with wide views of Langtang Ri, Ganesh Himal, Lang Sisa and Chorkari Ri along the way.
It is as much about the villages as the mountains — Chisopani and Sermanthang give you a look at Tamang life and tradition, and the pace leaves room to actually take that in.
What you'll do
- Start the trek on foot from Sundarijal at 1350m
- Walk through rhododendron forest with a good chance of spotting local wildlife
- Take in views of Langtang Ri, Ganesh Himal, Lang Sisa and Chorkari Ri
- Visit the Tamang villages of Chisopani and Sermanthang
- Swim in the Melamchi Khola
- Drive back to Kathmandu from Melamchi Bazaar
- Rated moderate rather than extreme, so it suits trekkers with some fitness but not necessarily high-altitude experience
- Close enough to Kathmandu that the trek avoids long approach flights or drives
