About this trip
This is the classic Marangu route up Kilimanjaro, known as the "Coca Cola" route for being the most straightforward way to the summit. Unlike the other routes, you sleep in solar-powered huts rather than tents, with proper beds and mattresses at each camp.
The huts are communal, so you'll share dining space with climbing groups from all over the world, which tends to make for a lively, sociable atmosphere in the evenings. Facilities are basic but decent lower down, with running water and bathrooms at the first two huts, dropping to simple latrines higher up.
Five days is the standard timing for this route, moving from rainforest up through moorland to the alpine zone before the final summit push.
What you'll do
- Trek through montane rainforest to Mandara Hut
- Continue across moorland to Horombo Hut
- Push on to Kibo Hut below the summit zone
- Attempt the summit at Uhuru Peak
- Descend back through Horombo to Marangu Gate
- Five days is a fast ascent for this altitude — acclimatization is limited compared with a 6-day version
- Accommodation is in communal huts with shared bunks, not tents
- Bathrooms and running water are only available at the two lower huts — expect basic latrines higher up
Worth it if you want attentive local guides, good food, and real safety checks. Think twice if you need more acclimatisation time on the 5-day route.
- Guides named John, Emanuel, Swalehe consistently matched or exceeded expectations; cooks produced restaurant-quality meals at altitude.
- Local company pricing undercuts international operators by roughly half whilst directing money straight to staff and local economy.
- Five-day Marangu route compresses acclimatisation; extra altitude hikes were key differentiator, not standard for all groups.
- Daily health monitoring and gear rental available; guides actively manage pace for slower climbers without judgment.
