About this trip
Eight days in Rwanda built around its two big primate experiences: tracking gorillas in Volcanoes National Park and chimpanzees in Nyungwe Forest, with the Dian Fossey grave hike and golden monkey tracking filling out the highland stretch.
It's a private tour, so it's just you (and whoever you're travelling with) and your guide throughout, moving between forest, memorial sites and local community visits at your own pace.
Alongside the wildlife, there's real space given to Rwanda's history and present — a visit to the Genocide Memorial Centre and the Ellen DeGeneres Campus, plus a local cultural experience away from the parks.
What you'll do
- Track mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park
- Hike to the Dian Fossey grave site
- Track chimpanzees in Nyungwe Forest
- Walk the Nyungwe canopy walkway
- Track golden monkeys
- Visit the Genocide Memorial Centre
- Rated moderate — several hikes involve sustained uphill walking at altitude
- Private tour, so the schedule can flex around your pace
- Gorilla and chimp tracking both mean unpredictable trek lengths depending on where the animals are that day
Worth it if you're fit enough for serious hiking and want authentic community-led tourism. Think twice if altitude/steep terrain worries you or you crave restaurant variety.
- Guides Ronald and Boaz were knowledgeable, accommodating, and prepared guests thoroughly the night before.
- Tour prioritises local businesses for accommodation and employment, genuinely giving back to Rwandan communities.
- Mount Bisoke hike is genuinely hard; altitude and steep terrain will challenge unprepared or unfit travellers.
- Five consecutive nights at same hotel means repetitive meal options; limited dining flexibility built into itinerary.
