About this trip

This is a week of walking through Cappadocia's volcanic landscape, based mostly around the town of Goreme, with days spent on foot in valleys and canyons rather than being driven between sights.

You'll trek through Gomeda and Pancarlik Valleys, past an 11th-century church and geometric murals, then walk the full 12km length of Ihlara Canyon along the river. There's also an underground city, a pottery demonstration, and Turkish food along the way.

The trip ends in Mustafapasa, a former Greek village, after starting from Uchisar with its rock citadel and fairy chimney views.

What you'll do

  • Walk beneath the fairy chimneys near Uchisar's rock citadel
  • Trek Gomeda and Pancarlik Valleys, taking in the 11th-century Pancarlik Church

  • Explore the Mazi underground city
  • Watch traditional pottery-making before finishing in Mustafapasa

  1. Join trip in Goreme town in Cappadocia — Goreme

Arrive in Goreme, which will serve as your base for the week. The town sits amid Cappadocia's distinctive rock formations, shaped by millennia of geological activity dating back to the Hittites. Your tour leader meets at the hotel at 7.30pm if you fancy dinner; otherwise, you're free to settle in.

  2. Walk through the White, Love and Pigeon Valleys. Explore the fortress town of Uchisar — Goreme

After a welcome meeting, walk through White Valley and Love Valley before climbing to Uchisar, a fortress town built into a massive fairy chimney. Lunch showcases regional dishes prepared by local women. You'll descend through Pigeon Valley—named for its traditional pigeon houses—before returning to Goreme on foot.

  3. Optionally catch a sunrise hot air balloon flight. Visit Goreme Open Air Museum next to your hotel to see its rock-cut churches and frescoes, then trek up to Aynali church, a site that served both worship and defence purposes. Note: narrow passages make this trek unsuitable for some.

  4. Transfer to Cavusin, perched above a collapsed early Christian cave city. Climb Mt Bozdag for panoramic views from 1,300 metres, taking in the coloured rock strata and distant Mt Erciyes. Descend through Red Valley and visit Uzumlu church along the way.

  5. Transfer to Uchisar's massive fairy chimney citadel, a centuries-old refuge with commanding regional views. Walk via Gorkundere Valley's fairy chimneys, exploring Uchisar Castle in morning light for best photographs. Descend steeply into shaded Zemi Valley as it widens.

  6. Drive 90 minutes to Ihlara Valley for an 11.5-kilometre walk through a 14-kilometre canyon carved by the Melendiz River. The lush, 120-metre-deep gorge holds hundreds of Byzantine rock-cut churches and dwellings. Visit Mazi Underground City, a subterranean Christian refuge carved from volcanic tuff.

  7. Trek from Ortahisar's monolithic citadel through Pancarlik Valley, home to an 11th-century church with well-preserved green frescoes. Continue via Kepez Church's geometric rock carvings, then descend into Gömeda Valley—a serene stream-side trail flanked by multi-storey pigeon houses and white tuff cliff dwellings.

  8. Depart Goreme at your own pace. Luggage storage is available at the hotel if your flight leaves later. Airport transfers depart from Kayseri Airport, roughly an hour and fifteen minutes away.
