About this trip
This trip takes you across western Madagascar to the Tsingy de Bemaraha, a limestone massif of sharp pinnacles and hidden forest that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990. Getting there is as much a part of it as the destination, with stops at the aluminium casserole makers of Ambatolampy and local craft workshops before a river trip down the Tsiribihina.
Along the way you will have chances to spot some of Madagascar's endemic wildlife, cool off in a natural swimming pool, and join a village party put on by local residents.
It is a 10-day trip run at a moderate pace, mixing guided sections with time for the boat journey and village encounters to unfold at their own speed.
What you'll do
- Explore the limestone pinnacles of the Tsingy de Bemaraha
- Visit the aluminium casserole makers of Ambatolampy
- Browse local craft workshops
- Travel by boat down the Tsiribihina River
- Swim in a natural pool
- Join a party hosted by a local village
- Partially guided, with a mix of organised activities and independent time
- Involves a river trip, so some days are spent travelling rather than sightseeing
- Suits travellers keen on a slower, culture-and-nature mix rather than a packed itinerary
Worth it if you're prepared for long driving days and want genuine cultural immersion. Think twice if you need comfort or smooth logistics.
- River cruise breaks up the trip nicely and offers swimming, local music, dancing with communities.
- Madagascar's roads are poor, meaning substantial time spent driving between sites each day.
- Luggage delays happened; pack essentials in carry-on and build in buffer time for arrivals.
- Tsingy hike itself is genuinely difficult but rewarding; guides are experienced and hotels are solid.
