About this trip

A 12-day family route through Vietnam, running from the busy streets of Ho Chi Minh City up to the limestone karsts of Ha Long Bay. It's built around comfort and covers a lot of ground, so expect a proper mix of cities, history and food along the way.

You'll get stuck into local life through food stalls, water puppet theatre, a cyclo ride and a home-cooked meal with a local family, alongside the bigger sights like Hoi An's old town and Hue's imperial ruins.

What you'll do

  • Eat at hole-in-the-wall eateries in Ho Chi Minh City
  • Stroll the Old Quarter in Hanoi
  • Watch a water puppet show at Hoan Kiem
  • Ride a cyclo past temples, pagodas and modern houses
  • Make lanterns in Hoi An
  • Explore the Forbidden Purple City in Hue
Good to know
  • Temple visits mean covering arms and knees — a light scarf helps in the heat
  • Day 7 involves a long overnight train from Hue to Hanoi; bedding is supplied but some families bring their own sleep sheets

Route map for Vietnam Family Holiday Comfort
  1. Land in Ho Chi Minh City and transfer to your hotel. At 5pm there's a welcome meeting with the other families and your local leader, followed by a group dinner sampling local cuisine. You can arrange extra time here beforehand to visit Cu Chi Tunnels if you want.

  2. Head south by minibus into the Mekong Delta. Board a private boat through the waterways, visit Ben Tre's coconut gardens and sample tropical fruits at a local home, then paddle sampans through the villages. A tuk-tuk tour shows you rural life before lunch with a local family and a return boat cruise.

  3. Fly north to Danang and transfer to Hoi An, a UNESCO World Heritage site with an Old Town largely unchanged for over a century. Your leader walks you through the Old Quarter past lantern displays and riverside boats, then you make your own lanterns with a local artisan before dinner.

  4. Spend the morning at one of Hoi An's palm-fringed beaches with views of the Cham Islands, including a picnic lunch. The afternoon is yours to explore—hire bikes for countryside rides, shop, or relax by the pool while the kids swim.

  5. A completely free day in Hoi An. Explore the Old Town's shops for t-shirts, paintings and ceramics, or get a custom outfit tailored. Your leader can arrange optional activities like a family cooking class with boat ride and farm tour, or you can simply beach and pool.

  6. Hue — Hue

Drive past coastal rice paddies and cross the scenic Hai Van Pass to reach Hue, Vietnam's former imperial capital. After free time to rest, explore by cyclo tour past the market and Ho Chi Minh's house, then enjoy a home-cooked dinner with a local family.

  7. Visit the Imperial Citadel and the Forbidden Purple City, where bomb damage from the 1968 Tet Offensive remains visible. These ruins reveal the scale of destruction from the war. Tonight, board an overnight train heading to Hanoi.

  8. Arrive in Hanoi early. After free time to rest, visit Vun Art, a social enterprise supporting people with disabilities through vocational training, and make your own artwork. Tonight experience a water puppet show, an ancient Vietnamese art form.

  9. Visit the Museum of Ethnology to explore Vietnam's diverse heritage, then the Temple of Literature. Lunch is at KOTO restaurant, an Intrepid partner supporting underprivileged youth in hospitality careers.

  10. Halong Bay — Halong Bay

Travel by minibus roughly 4 hours to the World Heritage-listed Halong Bay. Board your private boat and cruise between nearly 2000 limestone islands, swim in the East Sea, and explore caves with stalactites and stalagmites. Sleep aboard under the stars.

  11. Breakfast on the boat with an optional early morning kayak among the karsts. Return to Hanoi by bus, check in and freshen up, then join your group for a final celebration dinner.

  12. Your trip ends after breakfast. Depart the hotel whenever you like. Extend your stay in Hanoi's Old Quarter by arranging extra accommodation with your booking agent.

What's included

  • Guide: All Intrepid Family trips are accompanied by one of our group leaders. The aim of the group leader is to assist your family to take the hassle out of your travels and help you have the best trip possible. Your leader will provide information on the places you are travelling through, offer suggestions for fun things to do and see - for both kids and parents, recommend great local eating venues that will even get the kids trying new things, and introduce you to our local friends. While not being guides in the traditional sense you can expect them to have a broad general knowledge of the countries visited on the trip, including historical, cultural, religious and social aspects. Our leaders are not babysitters on this trip - we leave that to you (the experts), but they will make sure that group members of all ages are able to explore their destination safely and with as much fun as possible. Our group leaders are not responsible for looking after children at any time and children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times throughout this itinerary.

  • Accommodation: GENERAL ROOMING CONFIGURATIONS: Family of two: All family groupings of two will be accommodated in a twin room. Family of three: Wherever possible we will put you in a triple room. Please be aware that in some places triple rooms are in short supply. This means that a triple room will often be a twin room with a rollaway bed or mattress on the floor. Where triple rooms aren’t available it will be at your discretion which of your family takes the single room. Family of four or more: You will most likely be accommodated in two twin rooms. Where possible, we will accommodate your family in a quadruple room. While we do our very best to ensure that family groups are roomed close together (in some cases, we can arrange adjoining rooms), we can’t guarantee this. Most family holidays occur during peak season and we sometimes have little to no control over the exact placement of rooms within a hotel. Please be understanding if we are unable to room your family in immediate proximity of one another. Hotel (9 nights), Overnight boat (1 night), Overnight sleeper train (1 night)

  • Insurance: Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips for those travelling internationally. We require that at a minimum you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation. If you are travelling within your home country or region please confirm before travel that you are entitled to access the public medical system easily should an accident occur. We strongly recommend all travellers have a policy that also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage or personal effects. For international trips, you will not be permitted to join the group until evidence of travel insurance and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number has been sighted by your leader. If you have credit card insurance your group leader will require details of the participating insurer/underwriter, the level of coverage, policy number, and emergency contact number rather than the bank's name and your credit card details. Please contact your bank for these details prior to arriving in-country. Travellers who reside within the European Union or Switzerland receive basic international health insurance, so travel insurance is not mandatory under European Union Law. However, as this does not cover situations such as emergency rescues, private health care, or repatriation to their home country, comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended. European Union or Swiss travellers who decline travel insurance when travelling outside of their home region must sign a Travel Insurance Waiver Form at the Group Meeting.

What travellers actually say

Worth it if you want a genuinely well-paced family trip with standout local guide support. Think twice if you need guaranteed beach time or flexible weather contingency.

  • Guide Tham went beyond duties: managed severe allergies, lost luggage, and kept kids engaged throughout.
  • Itinerary balances early starts with slower days; hits both cultural sites and natural experiences effectively.
  • Weather disrupted beach plans; rainy stretches meant some activities didn't run as scheduled.
  • Tham's exceptional standard suggests quality depends heavily on your assigned guide; results may vary.
