About this trip
Machame is one of the most scenic ways up Kilimanjaro, climbing through rainforest, moorland and alpine desert before the final push to the summit. You don't need any technical climbing skills, but you do need to be fit, since this is eight days of sustained walking at altitude.
You camp the whole way, with porters carrying your gear, equipment and supplies, and a cook preparing meals each day. The route's longer, more gradual profile also gives you a real edge on acclimatisation compared with faster routes up the mountain.
Expect long days of walking rewarded with genuine views, from late-afternoon light over the Shira Plateau to the misty first sightings of Kibo from the Barranco Wall.
What you'll do
- Trek up through rainforest and moorland on the Shira Plateau
- Scramble the Barranco Wall
- Camp each night with porter and cook support
- Watch the changing light and landscape as you gain altitude
- Push for the summit and views of Kibo
- You need solid fitness rather than climbing experience
- This is a full camping expedition, not hut-based
- The longer route profile is chosen partly for better acclimatisation
Worth it if you want a well-organised climb with genuinely supportive guides and porters who handle logistics brilliantly. Think twice if you're solo and want built-in group company.
- Guides like Noel, Arnold, and Jerome are motivational and professional; porters handle all camp logistics so you arrive to ready tents and hot meals.
- Food quality is genuinely impressive—chef Emmanuel's soups and variety of meals stand out; tents are comfortable and well-maintained throughout.
- Solo climbers report loneliness and should confirm group size beforehand; tipping is essential and not included in quoted prices.
- Eight-day Machame route offers diverse scenery and reasonable success rates, but early starts and high altitude demand genuine fitness.
