About this trip
This is a trek into a valley that's still rebuilding after the 2015 earthquake, and walking it is a quiet way of putting money back into the local economy. You follow the Langtang River from Syabrubesi through Tamang villages, past waterfalls and old water mills, climbing steadily through rhododendron and pine forest towards the high valley.
The days build towards Kyanjin Gompa and the climb up Kyanjin Ri, where Langtang Lirung and a wall of unnamed peaks open up in front of you. Because the original valley village was badly damaged, nights there are now spent in Mumdu instead — a small sign of how recent this history still is.
It's a there-and-back route for most of the trip, though you can extend it over Ganjala Pass if you want more days on the trail.
What you'll do
- Walk the Langtang River trail through Tamang villages, waterfalls and traditional water mills
- Pass through rhododendron and pine forest en route to Lama Hotel
- Stop at Ghoda Tabela between the forest and the high valley
- Hike up to Kyanjin Gompa and climb Kyanjin Ri for views of Langtang Lirung and Tsergo Ri
- Option to extend the return route over Ganjala Pass
- Billed as a serious trek — expect sustained daily ascents and high altitude
- Partially guided, so some sections you cover independently
- Accommodation in the upper valley is now in Mumdu rather than Langtang village itself, following earthquake and glacial damage
