About this trip

Thirteen days through Egypt's ancient sites and down to the Red Sea coast, covering the country's big landmarks without rushing through them.

You start with the Pyramids of Giza, then move down the Nile taking in Karnak Temple, the Valley of the Kings and Philae Temple, with a stretch of sailing by felucca along the way.

The trip ends with a few easy days on the Red Sea in Hurghada, a chance to slow down after the temples and tombs.

  1. Arrive into Cairo, transfer to hotel — Cairo

    You arrive in Cairo and transfer to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day resting, or if you've landed early, join the optional Backstreets of Cairo tour departing at 10am from the hotel.

  2. Head out early to the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, then explore the necropolis at Saqqara, including Zhoser's step pyramid. These are the oldest structures on Earth's tourist map and have survived over 2,000 years.

  3. Spend the day at the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, a 490,000-square-metre complex. See King Tutankhamun's 11-kilogram solid gold funerary mask and other antiquities spanning ancient Egyptian history.

  4. Philae Temple — Aswan

    After settling in Aswan, take a boat to Agilika Island to visit the Temples of Philae, dedicated to the goddess Isis. Return to Aswan for a visit to a perfume oil emporium, then explore the souqs at your own pace.

  5. Rise early for the optional excursion to the rock-cut Temple of Abu Simbel and its colossal Ramses II statues. In the afternoon, board a traditional felucca for a two-night sail downstream the Nile, stopping at villages and islands.

  6. Felucca sailing & Kom Ombo Temple — Kom Ombo

    Spend a relaxed day sailing the Nile, swimming in the river, and watching the landscape drift past. In the afternoon, dock at Kom Ombo and visit the temple dedicated to Sobek, the crocodile-headed god.

  7. Kom Ombo & Luxor — Luxor

    Leave the felucca and travel to Luxor, home to the Valley of the Kings and Temple of Karnak. Unwind in the afternoon, or take an optional evening visit to the Temple of Luxor.

  8. Explore Luxor's West Bank: see the Colossi of Memnon, the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut and its surrounding tombs. After lunch, visit the Temple of Karnak, a monumental religious complex dedicated to the gods.

  9. Drive east from Luxor to Hurghada on the Red Sea Riviera, where you'll spend three days on the beach.

  10. Two free days in Hurghada. Optionally take a day trip to Giftun Island for swimming and snorkelling. The resort offers windsurfing, yachting, deep-sea fishing, SCUBA diving and easy access to prime offshore reefs.

  11. Drive back to Cairo. The rest of the day is free to relax or explore. You can optionally visit Khan el Khalili bazaar for last-minute souvenirs.

  12. After breakfast, check out of the hotel and transfer to the airport for departure.
