About this trip
A 10-day trip through Puglia and Matera built around slow living, good food and a proper sense of place. You base yourself at a family-run masseria in Salento, an organic olive estate 3km from the Adriatic, before heading to Matera's famous Sassi district.
This is a private, partially guided trip, so the pace is relaxed and the itinerary can flex around you. Expect cooking classes with produce from the estate's own garden, local guides who know the region, and a mix of countryside calm and Baroque city exploring.
The Salento coast changes character through the year — olive harvest in autumn and winter, sea and sunshine in summer — so the trip has a different feel depending on when you go.
What you'll do
- Stay at an 11-hectare organic olive estate (masseria) near the Adriatic coast
- Join a cooking class using produce from the estate's own garden
- Explore Matera's Sassi district with a local guide
- Visit Puglia's Baroque art cities
- Taste local specialties at handpicked restaurants in the region
- Experience the autumn/winter olive oil harvest if travelling in that season
- Private tour, so timings and some activities can be tailored to you
- Partially guided — some parts are independent, others led by local guides
- Easy pace, suited to travellers who want food, culture and countryside over a packed schedule
Worth it if you value authentic family immersion, flexibility and passionate local guides. Think twice if you need rigid itineraries and seamless logistics from day one.
- Emilio's daily home-cooked dinners using local ingredients and family farm life created genuine friendships, not tourist experiences.
- Matera arrival was chaotic—wrong directions, no communication about afternoon hotel closure, late check-in frustrated guests initially.
- Cosimo's Matera tours were deeply knowledgeable and generous: cave homes, rupestrian churches, food tastings, even arranged onward transport.
- Salento itinerary flexibility meant places visited on unexpected days and times, requiring comfort with 'unstructured' travel.
