About this trip
Twenty-three days across all five Central Asian republics, tracing the old Silk Road from Ashgabat to Almaty. This is a proper overland journey through a part of the world most people never get to, so expect long travel days rewarded by places that genuinely feel remote and little-visited.
You move through Turkmenistan's closed-off cities, Uzbekistan's Silk Road architecture, Tajikistan's mountains, Kyrgyzstan's nomadic highlands, and Kazakhstan's cities, with a guide throughout to handle the borders and logistics that make this region tricky to travel independently.
It suits travellers who want depth over comfort — five countries, five sets of customs, and a lot of ground covered, but with the history and landscapes to justify it.
What you'll do
- Wander Ashgabat's marble monuments and Turkmenistan's Silk Road ruins
- Walk the mosques and madrasas of Uzbekistan's historic cities
- Cross into Tajikistan's mountain regions
- Experience Kyrgyzstan's nomadic culture and highland scenery
- Finish in Almaty, Kazakhstan after crossing five borders overland
- Five countries and multiple border crossings in 23 days means a demanding pace with plenty of travel time between stops
- Suited to those comfortable with basic infrastructure in more remote areas
- Group travel with a fixed itinerary, so flexibility for solo detours is limited
