About this trip
This is a quieter route into Machu Picchu, following the old Inca Quarry Trail rather than the main Inca Trail. Over four days you walk through highland scenery and Inca history without the queues that build up on the classic route.
The trek mixes waterfalls, mountain views and genuine archaeological sites, including the quarry that once supplied stone for Ollantaytambo. You finish with a scenic train ride back rather than another long walk out.
What you'll do
- Walk the lesser-known Inca Quarry Trail to Machu Picchu
- Visit Perrolniyoq Falls in the highlands
- Explore the ancient Inca quarry that supplied stone for Ollantaytambo
- Stand at the Sun Gate at Ollantaytambo
- Return by the Panoramic Vistadome train
- A trekking-based trip, so you need a reasonable level of fitness for consecutive days of walking at altitude
- Quieter alternative to the main Inca Trail, suited to those wanting fewer crowds
