Route map for Albanian Highlights Private Tour | From South to North
  1. Tirane - Kruje - Shkoder — Tirana

Start in Kruja, birthplace of national hero Skanderbeg, exploring his castle and museum. Wander the Old Bazaar buying traditional carpets, silverware and copper work, then drive north to Shkoder, one of Europe's oldest cities, arriving after roughly two hours.

  2. Shkoder- Berat — Berat

Travel to Berat and tour its castle, still inhabited within ancient walls. Visit a local family for Turkish coffee and Gliko, then stroll through the UNESCO-listed quarters of Mangalem and Gorica, cross the New Bridge and explore the bars and restaurants below.

  3. Berat - Apolloni - Gjirokaster — Berat

Visit the ancient city of Apollonia, founded in the sixth century BC, touring its monastery, Church of St. Mary and archaeological museum. Head south to Gjirokaster, a UNESCO World Heritage site with stone-roofed houses built steep on slopes, carefully preserved and distinctive.

  4. Gjirokaster - Butrint - Ksamil - Sarande — Gjirokastra

Drive south to coastal Saranda on the Ionian Sea, then visit the well-preserved ancient city of Butrint with its Greek and Roman ruins and open theatre within a national park. Pop across to the nearby islands of Ksamil for a drink and a swim.

  5. Hike up to Borsh castle at 500 metres for panoramic views of mountains and coast, seeing its mosque and history. Continue north to Porto Palermo Castle, the Riviera's crown jewel built in 1814 on an island connected by a narrow strip of land, then swim at the nearby beach.

  6. Walk the 270-metre bridge to pine-covered Zvernec Island off Vlora's coast, visiting the 13th-century Byzantine Monastery of St. Mary. Head to Karavasta Lagoon, Albania's largest, for a boat trip and tower visit, then return to Tirana via Durrës with a free evening.

  7. Take a guided walk around Tirana, stepping into Bunk'Art 2, a former anti-nuclear bunker, and Skanderbeg Square with its communist-era buildings. Visit the Orthodox Autocephalous Church and Pazari I Ri market, then drive to Petrela castle before returning to the city.

What travellers actually say

Worth it if you value cultural immersion, excellent local guides, and authentic Albanian food. Think twice if you want optional activities included or prefer fewer historical sites.

  • Guides consistently excel: deep historical knowledge, fluent English, skilled driving, restaurant recommendations authentic and excellent.
  • Food quality stands out—fresh, locally sourced cheese and yoghurt, generous portions, guides steer you to genuine local restaurants.
  • Optional activities like wine tasting and boat trips weren't included despite being advertised; castle itinerary felt heavy-handed.
  • Personalization works well if you communicate preferences early; agents responsive to custom schedules around history and culture focus.
