About this trip
This trek takes you to Everest Base Camp on foot, then skips the long walk back by flying you out from Gorekshep straight to Kathmandu by helicopter. It's built for people who want the full classic trail experience up, without spending another week retracing their steps down.
You fly into Lukla and follow the well-known route through Sagarmatha National Park, passing through Namche Bazaar, Tengboche and Lobuche on your way to Gorekshep. From there you climb Kalapatthar before dawn for sunrise over Everest, then head to Base Camp itself.
The helicopter flight back over Everest and the surrounding peaks is one of the two big draws here, alongside the trek itself, and it cuts the whole trip down to 10 days rather than the usual two weeks or so.
What you'll do
- Trek through Sagarmatha National Park past rhododendron, oak, pine and fir forest
- Pass through Namche Bazaar and visit the Sherpa Cultural Museum
- Visit Tengboche Monastery
- Climb Kalapatthar before sunrise for views of Mt Everest
- Reach Everest Base Camp on foot
- Fly back to Kathmandu by helicopter from Gorekshep over Everest and neighbouring peaks
- You trek one way only — the return leg is by helicopter, not on foot
- High altitude throughout, including a pre-dawn climb to Kalapatthar in cold, windy conditions
- Fits Everest Base Camp into 10 days rather than the usual 14 to 15 needed for a full there-and-back trek
Worth it if you want personal attention from a responsive operator and don't mind early starts and altitude challenges. Think twice if you need guaranteed acclimatisation time or prefer larger group dynamics.
- Owner Dhruba picks you up at airport and stays involved end-to-end, even arranging post-trek cultural tours.
- Sherpas like Mingma set a slower pace with frequent rest breaks, making EBC achievable for older or less fit trekkers.
- Helicopter return from EBC avoids the trudge back down and lets you skip an extra night at Gorak Shep.
- Reviews don't address altitude sickness, fitness requirements, or what happens if weather grounds the helicopter return.
