About this trip
Langtang Valley sits closer to Kathmandu than Nepal's better-known trekking regions, so you get proper high-mountain trekking without days of travel just to reach the trailhead.
You walk through pine and rhododendron forest along the Langtang river, climbing gradually to Kyanjin Gompa, with the trail passing through villages rebuilt since the 2015 earthquake. The Tamang communities here still farm and run teahouses much as they did before, and you'll pick up on that quietly determined way of life as you pass through.
Kathmandu itself gets a look-in too, with time to take in some of its cultural sites before or after the trek.
What you'll do
- Trek the Langtang valley trail from forest to high alpine terrain
- Reach Kyanjin Gompa, the trek's main village base
- Hike up to Kyanjin Ri at 4,775m for mountain views
- Pass through Tamang villages rebuilt since the 2015 earthquake
- Take in the Himalayan views of the Langtang Himal range
- Spend time exploring Kathmandu's cultural sites
- Involves trekking to altitudes above 4,700m, so some acclimatisation and a reasonable fitness level are needed
- Partially guided — expect some sections where you're trekking with more independence than on a fully guided tour
- Suits those wanting a shorter, more accessible Himalayan trek rather than a multi-week expedition
Worth it if you want fewer crowds, attentive guides, and customizable itineraries. Think twice if you're prone to altitude sickness or dislike long days with big elevation gains.
- Guides Krishna and Rajendra actively customise routes, handle all logistics, and check on you regularly throughout.
- Langtang Valley delivers dramatic landscapes—forests, rhododendrons, snow peaks—without the Everest Base Camp crowds.
- Expect punishing days: one reviewer did 1,200m ascent plus 1,500m descent, then 10 hours and 1,900m down next day.
- Altitude sickness hit multiple trekkers despite acclimatisation days; weather can force itinerary changes mid-trek.
