Rongai Route – A Remote & Scenic Trek to Kilimanjaro’s Summit

Rongai Gate → Marangu 7 days Up to 100

About this trip

Seven days on Kilimanjaro's Rongai Route, approaching from the north near the Kenyan border. It's the quieter side of the mountain, with far fewer trekkers than the main routes, and a gradual profile that gives your body more time to adjust to the altitude.

You move through rainforest, open moorland and alpine desert before the final push to Uhuru Peak, so the scenery changes constantly. The dry climate on this side tends to mean clearer views over the plains below.

Expert guides and porters support you throughout, with the pace built around proper acclimatisation rather than rushing the ascent.

What you'll do

  • Trek the northern Rongai Route, one of the least crowded paths up Kilimanjaro
  • Pass through rainforest, moorland and alpine desert on the way up
  • Reach Uhuru Peak at 5,895m, the summit of Kilimanjaro
  • Take in panoramic views across the East African plains
  • Camp each night with support from experienced guides and porters
Good to know
  • A gradual, well-paced ascent designed to help with acclimatisation rather than speed
  • Quieter and more remote than routes like Machame or Marangu
  • Suited to those wanting a genuine high-altitude trekking challenge rather than a casual walk
