About this trip

Nine days in Chile built around the W trek, one of Patagonia's best-known multi-day hikes through Torres del Paine National Park. You're backpacking with a small group and experienced local guides, covering some of the park's most striking terrain on foot.

The route takes you from lenga forest up to the base of the Las Torres towers and out to Grey Glacier, so you get the classic Patagonian mix of granite peaks, forest, and ice in one trip.

What you'll do

  • Trek the W circuit in Torres del Paine National Park
  • Climb through lenga forest to the base of the Las Torres towers
  • See Grey Glacier up close
  • Guided throughout by local trekking guides
Good to know
  • This is a backpacking trek, so you're carrying your own gear across mountain terrain — a reasonable level of fitness helps
  • Fully guided in a small group, with the trekking itself as the main focus of the trip

Route map for Essential Patagonia
  1. Land in Puerto Natales and get picked up by your OneSeed guide, who'll take you to the partner B&B. You'll meet your local guide around 6pm, go through the welcome pack and do a gear check before settling in.

  2. PUERTO NATALES TO LAS TORRES CAMP — Puerto Natales

Meet your guide in Puerto Natales then drive two hours into Torres del Paine National Park, watching snow-capped peaks rise around you. You'll reach Las Torres Camp by evening with lunch provided en route.

  3. Hike to the base of The Towers, a full day that climbs 2,000 feet through lenga forest and rocky terrain alongside glacial rivers. You'll reach an emerald lake metres from the towers themselves before heading back to camp; about 8 hours trekking, 20km total.

  4. Trek from Las Torres to Los Cuernos Camp, spending the day between Lake Nordenskjold and the Paine Massif. The camp sits nestled between Cerro Hoja and Cerro Máscara, two distinctive horned peaks; 7-8 hours trekking, 11.3km.

  5. Walk through old-growth forest toward Paine Grande Camp via Italian Camp, where you can swap to a daypack if you're keen on an extra 8-mile round-trip into French Valley for 360-degree views. The standard route is around 9 miles and 7-8 hours; the full option stretches to 12 hours.

  6. Hike to Grey Glacier across Pehoé Lake and Grey Lake, watching this massive ice field come into view. You'll reach Refugio Grey by afternoon and can relax there or explore; about 4-5 hours trekking, 7 miles.

  7. Walk along Grey Glacier toward Campamento Paso on your final trekking day. You can book an optional ice hike or kayak through Bigfoot Patagonia (book in advance yourself) to scale ladders and get close to the glacier; 6-8 hours trekking, 6-7 miles.

  8. A 3-4 hour walk takes you to the catamaran at Pehoé Lake, which carries you out of the park. Your guide drives you back to Puerto Natales for a farewell dinner at the partner lodge before your final night.

  9. Your OneSeed rep picks you up for the airport or bus station in Puerto Natales to start your journey home. Breakfast is included before you leave.

You must show proof of insurance prior to your trip and will not be permitted to begin your expedition until completed. You may purchase this coverage through the insurance provider of your choice but it must include emergency medical and emergency evacuation insurance, providing coverage against personal accident, death, medical expenses, emergency repatriation and personal liability. We also strongly recommend that it covers cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage and personal effects. A reputable insurance provider will have customer support agents who can answer questions and help choose the best plan for you. At a minimum, your coverage must include: Emergency Accident and Sickness Medical Expense Benefit: $100,000 Emergency Evacuation Benefit: $300,000 The pandemic has added additional complexities surrounding insurance as no policy covers all COVID-19 travel risks. It is the responsibility of the traveler to understand what is and is not covered under their specific policy. Insurance providers often bundle medical and evacuation with trip cancellation & interruption insurance. CANCELLATION INSURANCE (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) We highly recommend purchasing additional trip cancellation & interruption insurance after booking your flights. Supplemental insurance may cover the following: Trip cancellation due to an injury before your expedition Trip cancellation if a family member becomes ill Reimbursement if your flight is cancelled or delayed due to weather Lost baggage or theft 24-hour customer support

What travellers actually say

Worth it if you want small groups, knowledgeable guides, and well-oiled logistics. Think twice if you need guaranteed ice-hike spots without early planning.

  • Guides like Roberto, Mauricio, and Sofia are genuinely excellent—knowledgeable, patient, professional, and actively manage weather to avoid crowds.
  • Winter timing gives you solitude; only two other small groups visible the entire trek, plus shorter days mean planning feels less rushed.
  • Ice-hike spots aren't guaranteed; you need to book early and arrive at Grey refugio early to secure a kayaking and ice-hike slot.
  • The trek is physically demanding with stiff muscles, but refugios exceed expectations and meals are genuinely well-done throughout.
