About this trip
Four days around Cusco covering the big names of the Sacred Valley plus a short stretch of the Inca Trail into Machu Picchu, capped off with a walk up to Rainbow Mountain.
You will be moving most days, from Inca ruins to high-altitude salt pans to a proper trek, so it suits people who want to see a lot without spending a full week on the trail.
Guided throughout, with the mix of history, farming heritage and mountain scenery giving a rounded picture of the region rather than just the postcard shot of Machu Picchu.
What you'll do
- Walk a short section of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
- Explore the archaeological sites of Pisac and Ollantaytambo
- See the Inca-era agricultural terraces used for crop experimentation
- Visit the Maras salt mines above 3,000 metres and learn how the salt is produced
- Hike up to Rainbow Mountain for views over its coloured slopes
- Rated moderate, with a full trekking day at high altitude to Rainbow Mountain
- Involves multiple sites and altitude changes over four days, so some fitness and acclimatisation matter
- Suits families and groups happy with a fairly full-on pace rather than a slow-travel style
