Start in San Francisco, then take the Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 1) south — Big Sur is the stretch everyone remembers — down to Los Angeles over two or three days. From LA, cut inland to Las Vegas, the launch pad for the desert. The Grand Canyon's South Rim is the headline, about 4.5 hours from Vegas, and if you've got the days, Zion and Bryce Canyon in Utah are close enough to loop in. Then it's back to Vegas or LA to fly out.
Driving ranges, park passes & summer
This is a driving trip — the legs are long (LA to Vegas is ~4.5 hours, Vegas to the Grand Canyon another 4.5), so plan realistic days and don't over-schedule. Summer is peak: the parks are busy and desert temperatures are extreme, so book campsites or motels ahead and carry far more water than you think you need. Spring and autumn are more comfortable.
