About this trip
This 8-day climb takes the Lemosho Route up Kilimanjaro, one of the less-crowded ways onto the mountain. You start remote, walking through forest before climbing up to the Shira Plateau, a wide, wild landscape you approach gradually rather than all at once.
From the plateau you traverse below Kilimanjaro's western Breach and pick up the south circuit, joining the Barafu Route for the final push. It is a longer, more scenic build to the summit push, giving you more time to adjust to altitude before the hard part.
An armed ranger walks with the group through the forest near the Lemosho Glades, since animals still move through that area.
What you'll do
- Trek the quiet, remote Lemosho Route through untouched forest
- Reach the wide open Shira Plateau
- Traverse beneath Kilimanjaro's western Breach
- Join the south circuit before switching to the Barafu Route for summit approach
- Walk with an armed ranger through wildlife-active forest near Lemosho Glades
- A longer, gentler route in terms of altitude gain, which helps with acclimatisation before the summit push
- Camping throughout, not lodge-based
- Suited to those wanting a quieter, less-trafficked route up the mountain rather than the fastest option
Worth it if you want proper acclimatisation pacing and guides who genuinely monitor altitude sickness. Think twice if you need luxury camps or shorter days.
- Guides actively monitor altitude sickness hourly and adjust pace; some climbers summited despite fever, nausea, breathing issues.
- Same guides (Swalehe, Babu, Amiri, John) consistently named across reviews for technical expertise and emotional support during summit push.
- Food quality remarkable for mountain conditions; chef Chinga produces hot, nourishing meals daily. Porters carry heavy loads with good spirits.
- Eight-day Lemosho route involves long days and early starts; first-time climbers reported altitude symptoms mid-climb requiring guide intervention.
