About this trip
This is a demanding 17-day trek through the Everest region that combines two classic routes into one - the Gokyo Lakes circuit and Everest Base Camp itself, linked by the Cho La pass at 5,420m.
Rather than heading straight up the standard Base Camp trail, you take in the turquoise Gokyo Lakes and climb Gokyo Ri before crossing the Cho La to rejoin the main trail toward Base Camp and Kalapatthar. It's a longer, higher and more varied route than the usual trek.
Expect long days on foot through Sherpa villages and high mountain terrain, with several vantage points over 5,400m along the way.
What you'll do
- Cross the Cho La pass at 5,420m
- Hike up Gokyo Ri for views over the Gokyo Lakes
- Walk the trail to Everest Base Camp
- Climb Kalapatthar at 5,545m for close-up Everest views
- Explore Sherpa villages along the route
- High-altitude trek with several days above 5,000m, so acclimatisation and fitness matter
- Partially guided — some sections are independent walking
- Long trek at 17 days, suited to those wanting more than the standard Base Camp route
Worth it if you're fit enough for high altitude and accept basic mountain logistics. Think twice if you need guaranteed clear views or dislike pasta-heavy menus.
- Guides Hari, Arjun and Kanchha consistently prioritise safety and adapt pace to group fitness levels without complaint.
- Agency handles logistics smoothly: quick airport pickups, responsive pre-trek communication, swift porter replacements when needed.
- Weather delays are real; one group stranded in Lukla five days. Operators may push expensive helicopter options instead of cheap alternatives.
- Mountain lodge food is basic, comfortable enough, but menus repeat heavily; expect pasta frequently. Cold nights require decent sleeping bag.
