About this trip
A short lodge-based trek into the Khumbu, following the same trail used by Everest Base Camp trekkers but turning back after reaching the high viewpoints above Namche Bazaar.
You fly from Kathmandu into Lukla's mountain airstrip, then walk into Sherpa country, past prayer flags and monasteries, up to Sagarmatha National Park for sunrise over Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Ama Dablam.
It's a compact way to get proper Himalayan views and a taste of Sherpa life without committing to the full Base Camp trek.
What you'll do
- Fly from Kathmandu to the mountain airstrip at Lukla
- Trek through Sherpa villages and Tibetan Buddhist monasteries
- Spend a full day exploring Namche Bazaar, the region's main town
- Hike up to Sagarmatha National Park for sunrise over Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Ama Dablam
- Take in views from the Sangboche viewpoint
- This is a shorter, lower-altitude alternative to a full Everest Base Camp trek, good if time is limited
- Nights are spent in mountain lodges rather than tents
- Some altitude gain is involved even on this shorter route, so a reasonable level of fitness helps
Worth it if you book with Mount Adventure Holidays and get Pasang as organiser. Think twice if you're budget-conscious, need dietary accommodation, or prefer guides who match your pace.
- Pasang and experienced guides like Nima consistently go far beyond: airport pickups, home dinners, real-time itinerary tweaks, helping with medical issues.
- One guide ignored a solo traveller, walked far ahead with earphones in, skipped the advertised Everest View hotel, and left her paying for supposed inclusions.
- Tea houses have zero heating; limited food and drink options; hot showers, extra tea, snacks all cost extra. Budget significantly beyond stated price.
- Trek difficulty varies sharply: Phakding to Namche is intermediate-hard. Solo slower hikers need guides who actually stay with you throughout.
