About this trip
A short trek around the green hills that ring Kathmandu Valley, mixing easy walking with a good dose of history. Over three days you get forest trails, valley views, and a stop in Bhaktapur to see some of the valley's oldest architecture.
The trail itself is gentle, running through pine and oak forest, farmland, and small settlements, with Nagarkot as the high point for sunrise and sunset over the Himalayas. On clear days you can pick out Everest, Lhotse, Manaslu, Cho Oyu, and Makalu along the horizon.
It's built for people who are short on time but still want a proper taste of Nepal's mountains, culture, and village life without committing to a long expedition.
What you'll do
- Hike through pine and oak forest around the Kathmandu Valley rim
- Watch sunrise and sunset over the Himalayas from Nagarkot
- Spot Everest, Lhotse, Manaslu, Cho Oyu and Makalu on clear days
- Visit Bhaktapur to see the valley's oldest temple and historic architecture
- Pass through a Tamang village and see rural valley life
- An easy, short trek suited to those with limited time rather than experienced trekkers looking for a challenge
- Best done from late February to March or September to December
- Pace is gentle, with plenty of stops for views and village life rather than long trekking days
Worth it if you're reasonably fit and have a capable guide. Think twice if you're older or less mobile—the 'easy' rating undersells the uphill stair climbing.
- Guides like Chandra and Bishnu elevate the trek through storytelling, local knowledge, and genuine care for group welfare.
- Brochure calls it easy with no trekking poles needed, but day one involves sustained uphill stair climbing in wet weather.
- Bhaktapur genuinely feels like stepping into history, and Nagarkot accommodation is solid; cultural immersion is real, not touristy.
- Nepal Social Treks staff are consistently professional and organised; the itinerary matches what's promised.
