About this trip

Seven days of cycling across northern Tanzania, starting near the foot of Kilimanjaro and finishing at the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. You cover the region under your own steam, rather than from a vehicle window, taking in the changing landscape at a slower pace.

Expect a mix of open plains, farmland, and villages, with the crater's scale as the payoff at the end. It's a moderate-grade ride, so you'll want a reasonable base level of fitness rather than serious cycling experience.

Guided throughout as part of a small group, with wildlife, culture, and views of Tanzania's northern circuit woven into the route rather than saved for a single stop.

What you'll do

  • Cycle from the base of Kilimanjaro across northern Tanzania
  • Ride through rural villages and farmland along the way
  • Take in panoramic views of the northern circuit by bike
  • Finish at the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater
  • Spot wildlife en route through the region
Good to know
  • Rated moderate — you'll need a reasonable fitness level for consecutive days of cycling
  • Fully guided small-group format throughout

Route map for Cycling from Kilimanjaro to Ngorongoro Crater
  1. A One Bike guide picks you up from Kilimanjaro airport and drives you to your hotel in Moshi, briefing you on the week ahead. You can rest and explore the town at your own pace.

  2. Cycle 64km west from the One Bike shop through Chagga villages, banana and coffee plantations, then into drier Maasai plains. You'll ride tarmac and gravel, climbing gentle hills and potentially spotting wildlife, ending in Ngabobo village.

  3. West Kilimanjar – Arusha | 83 km — Kilimanjaro

An 83km ride on dusty dirt and tarmac through Ngasurai plains—a migration corridor where elephants roam from Kenya's Amboseli—then onto easier main roads toward Arusha with Mount Meru in view. Stay in an Arusha lodge.

  4. The longest day at 102km on mostly undulating tarmac through colourful Tanzanian villages, ending at Tarangire National Park's border where Tanzania's largest elephant concentration lives. Rest at Roika Tented Lodge.

  5. Tarangire national park – Lake Manyara | 74 km — Tarangire National Park

The toughest 43km final stretch: climb the steep Great Rift Valley escarpment past Lake Manyara National Park gate for views, cycle through Karatu town, and reach Ngorongoro Conservation Area gate. Transfer to lodge to celebrate.

  6. Lake Mayara – Ngorongoro crater | 43 km — Lake Manyara

Rest at the lodge and wait for your transfer back to Kilimanjaro airport or your departure point.

What travellers actually say

Worth it if you want genuine off-track exploration with wildlife encounters and guides who adapt the pace. Think twice if you need hand-holding on logistics before arrival.

  • Bikes are excellent new Giant hardtails; support vehicle follows constantly so you're never stranded.
  • Hillary (the guide) is genuinely knowledgeable and will reshape daily itineraries around weather and your fitness level.
  • You'll see giraffe, zebra, wildebeest metres from the path in areas typical tourists never reach.
  • Early airport pickups required; accommodation varies (Maasai huts to lakeside lodges) depending on season availability.
