About this trip

Five days in northern Tanzania, camping in public campsites inside or near Tarangire, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area. You travel with a driver guide and a cook, moving between parks by 4WD each day.

This is a proper camping safari, not a lodge trip with a tent thrown in. Your mobile tents get pitched fresh at each public campsite, and you share bathroom facilities with other campers rather than having your own en-suite.

It suits people who want to be close to the wildlife and keep costs down, and who don't mind trading some comfort — hot showers aren't guaranteed — for a more stripped-back way of doing a safari.

What you'll do

  • Game drives through Tarangire National Park
  • Track wildlife across the Serengeti plains
  • Visit the Ngorongoro Conservation Area
  • Camp overnight at public campsites near the parks
  • Meals cooked for you by a dedicated safari cook
Good to know
  • Shared bathroom facilities at campsites, not private ones
  • Hot showers are not guaranteed at most public campsites
  • Budget-focused format aimed at travellers happy to camp rather than stay in lodges

  1. ARUSHA TO TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK — Arusha

Your driver picks you up after breakfast and heads into Tarangire National Park for a game drive. The park's acacia woodland and baobab trees frame the Tarangire River, which draws huge elephant herds during the dry season. You'll also spot buffalo, zebra, greater kudu, fringed-eared oryx, and ashy starlings across the plains and swamps.

  2. TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK TO SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK — Tarangire National Park

A four-hour drive through Karatu farmland and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area takes you to Serengeti National Park. You descend into endless plains and head to the Seronera area, where the Seronera River supports one of the park's richest concentrations of wildlife. You arrive in time for an afternoon game drive.

  3. You spend the day on a full game drive tracking migrating herds across the Serengeti. Your guide knows where animals congregate seasonally—north in July to October, south during November to December rains, and central during the April to June wet season. You'll see wildebeest, zebras, and the predators that follow them.

  4. SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK TO NGORONGORO CRATER — Serengeti National Park

After a morning game drive and lunch, you head towards Ngorongoro Crater. On the way through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, you encounter Maasai communities and glimpse their pastoral way of life. You overnight at Simba Campsite.

  5. Before breakfast, you descend 600 metres into Ngorongoro Crater for a half-day game drive. Year-round water and vegetation support wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hippo, elephant, and a notably dense population of lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs, and leopards. The crater is also your best chance to spot black rhino.
