About this trip

This is a six-day climb of Kilimanjaro via the Marangu route, the shortest and most established way up the mountain. Rather than tents, you sleep in solar-powered huts with bunk beds and mattresses, and the extra day built into this itinerary is there to help your body adjust to the altitude.

The huts are communal, so you end up sharing dining space and evenings with climbing groups from other countries, which tends to make for a sociable, upbeat atmosphere rather than a solitary trek.

It's a moderate route by Kilimanjaro standards, but this is still a serious high-altitude climb, not a countryside walk.

What you'll do

  • Trek through rainforest, moorland and alpine terrain on the way to the summit
  • Sleep in solar-powered huts with mattresses and pillows rather than tents
  • Use the extra acclimatisation day to rest at Horombo or climb toward Mawenzi's basecamp
  • Share meals and evenings with other international climbing groups in communal dining huts
  • Aim for Uhuru Peak, Kilimanjaro's summit
Good to know
  • Bathrooms and running water are only available at the two lower huts; the highest camp has basic latrines
  • Bring small Tanzanian bills if you want to buy drinks at the huts, as prices rise with altitude
  • This is a six-day version of a route usually done in five, built in specifically to improve your chances of acclimatising well

Route map for Kilimanjaro climb marangu route
  1. Leave Moshi at 9 AM after a guide briefing, drive 45 minutes to Marangu Gate, register, and start hiking at 10:30 AM through rainforest thick with Eucalyptus, Colobus monkeys and bird life. Muddy underfoot, so gaiters and poles help. Lunch halfway, then reach Mandara Huts by 2–3 PM; rest, have tea, and consider a 15-minute trip to Maundi Crater for views across Northern Tanzania.

  2. Horombo Hut — Mandara Hut

Breakfast at 7:30 AM, break camp by 8:30 AM, then hike through rainforest glades into heathland dotted with giant lobelias and groundsels. The path climbs through open moorland into views of Mawenzi. Reach Horombo Huts by 3 PM with Kibo's summit visible ahead. Running water available. Altitude may start to bite; you can rest an extra day here if needed.

  3. Early breakfast, and if you wake before dawn you can catch sunrise photos. Hike through dwindling heathland into a stark saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, a moonscape terrain. Stop for lunch and study the Kibo summit route you'll tackle in hours. Reach Kibo Huts with no running water; watch for altitude sickness symptoms.

  4. Optional acclimatisation day at Horombo Huts (3,690 m). Either rest at the huts or take a stroll to Mawenzi basecamp and back. This extra night helps your body adjust and gives you time to read the mountain's weather patterns before the summit push on day four.

  5. Uhuru Peak — Kibo Huts

Wake at midnight for a light breakfast, then leave at 1 AM to switchback up steep scree and possibly snow in darkness. Reach Gilman's Point (5,861 m) on the crater rim between 5–7 AM to see the crater and its icecaps at dawn. Another 2 hours along the rim near the snows brings you to Uhuru Peak by 9 AM—Africa's highest point.

  6. Pack and descend through moorland to Mandara Huts for lunch, then drop through lush forest to the park gate by 2–3 PM. Tip your guides, cooks and porters, then drive back to Moshi for celebration. Onward to the airport or other Tanzania and Kenya destinations; Zanzibar beaches are a popular way to recover.

What travellers actually say

Worth it if you want genuinely attentive guides and porters who treat you like family and deliver solid food at altitude. Think twice if you need pre-trip hand-holding; communication before departure is slack.

  • Guides and porters go genuinely above and beyond: rubbing frozen fingers, waking you with hot drinks, celebrating birthdays with cake.
  • Food quality is surprisingly good and portions huge—soups, chicken, fish, pasta cooked properly at altitude most days.
  • Pre-trip communication from the company is minimal; you must ask questions or research elsewhere to feel properly prepared.
  • Salinero Hotel in Moshi (pre and post-climb) is clean and well-run; gear checks happen on arrival, not before.
