About this trip

This trip takes you through the highlights of southern Peru, from Inca history around Cusco and the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu itself, then on to Lake Titicaca and the deep drop of Colca Canyon.

Along the way you get a mix of ancient engineering, high-altitude landscapes and living culture, from stone walls cut by Inca masons to communities still based on Lake Titicaca's floating islands.

It's a broad sweep of the country in 11 days, covering Lima, Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca and Arequipa, with a moderate hiking element built in.

  1. Arrive in Lima — Lima

    Arrive in Lima. You'll meet local guides and fellow travellers on each day's activity rather than a fixed group, with all transfers and accommodation pre-arranged. Get settled into your hotel.

  2. Meet your guide at 2PM for a private city tour. Visit Plaza Mayor and San Francisco Convent, exploring its cloisters, churches, library and catacombs—watch your head in the low-ceilinged passages. See frescoes, sculptures and the tomb of Francisco Pizarro. Return to hotel.

  3. Lima - Cusco flight. City Tour — Lima

    Fly southeast over the Andes to Cusco (one hour). Settle at your hotel and drink complimentary coca tea to adjust to the 3,300-metre elevation. At 2PM, tour Sacsayhuamán's monolithic stone walls, Q'enqo cave structure, Pucapucara fortress and Tambomachay.

  4. Full-day Sacred Valley tour northeast from Cusco. Drive to Pisaq, stopping at scenic overlooks to photograph the dramatic landscape. Visit the indigenous craft market and glimpse the fortress high above the town, then continue west through picturesque villages.

  5. Machu Picchu Tour — Cusco

    Very early start to Poroy or Ollantaytambo train station for your journey to Aguas Calientes. Bus up to Machu Picchu, the remarkable archaeological site nestled on a flattened mountain. Explore the Sacred District, Popular District and District of Royalty with your guide, including the Temple of the Sun.

  6. Ten-hour guided bus journey to Puno. Stop at Andahuaylillas, a cathedral with frescoes covering nearly every wall (photography prohibited), then Raqchi's temple ruins with cottages, warehouses and the remains of the largest Incan church, featuring impressive stonework.

  7. Titicaca lake, Uros, Taquile motor yacht group tour (Full Day) — Puno

    Motor yacht group tour of Lake Titicaca's Uros floating islands. Meet residents preserving their traditions and see how they build islands and craft from reeds; optional reed boat rides available. Continue to steep Taquile island, inhabited by native Quechuas, to browse handmade crafts.

  8. Transfer Puno – Colca Canyon — Puno

    Tourist bus towards Colca Canyon, four hours from Puno to Chivay. Colca Canyon is twice as deep as the Grand Canyon but lacks steep walls. Overnight in Chivay.

  9. Visit the Cross of the Condor viewpoint near Condor Cabana to watch condors in flight. Continue to Arequipa, the White City, built from white sillar volcanic stone. Check into your hotel.

  10. Walking tour of Arequipa's white sillar buildings in its pleasant, sunny climate. Visit Santa Catalina Convent and museum to see Juanita Mummy, one of South America's oldest preserved mummies. Observe El Misti, the snow-covered inactive volcano at the city's base.

  11. Transfer to Arequipa airport for your 1.5-hour flight back to Lima and your international connection home.
