About this trip

This is a 7-day climb of Kilimanjaro via the Machame route, known to climbers as the "Whiskey" route. It's the most popular way up the mountain, approaching from the south before swinging east.

Expect longer days and steeper walking than the alternative Marangu route. You camp throughout, and the route traverses beneath Kilimanjaro's southern ice field on the way to the summit.

This one suits people who want a proper physical challenge and come with some hiking or backpacking behind them, rather than a first ever multi-day trek.

What you'll do

  • Climb Kilimanjaro via the Machame route
  • Camp each night on the mountain
  • Traverse beneath the southern ice field
  • Reach the summit on day 6 of 7
Good to know
  • Rated a difficult route — steeper and longer days than Marangu
  • Better suited to those with some prior hiking or backpacking experience
  • Seven days is the recommended minimum; six is possible but tighter

Route map for Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Via Machame Route
  1. Drive fifty minutes from Moshi through Machame village to the park gate, then hike through dense rainforest on a winding ridge trail for 5–7 hours, gaining nearly 4,000 feet to reach Machame Camp.

  2. Leave the rainforest behind and climb steeply onto the Shira Plateau, passing through heather and moorland, then cross a large river gorge over 4–6 hours to reach Shira 2 Camp at 12,500 feet.

  3. Ascend to the Lava Tower, a 300-foot volcanic rock formation, then descend through the strange Senecio Forest down to Barranco Camp. Despite starting and finishing at similar elevations, the day at higher altitude aids acclimatization.

  4. Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp — Karanga

Drop into a ravine and tackle the steep, nearly 900-foot Great Barranco Wall, then cross undulating terrain before descending sharply into Karanga Valley and climbing to Karanga Camp—a shorter day built for acclimatisation.

  5. Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp — Barafu Hut

Head uphill to the Mweka Trail junction, then push through rocky ground to Barafu Hut at 15,331 feet. The Southern Circuit is now complete, and both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks are visible from camp.

  6. Start around midnight for the summit push, climbing 7–8 hours through extreme cold and wind in darkness. Near Stella Point at 18,900 feet, watch the sunrise over Mawenzi, then descend 12km through 4–6 hours to Mweka Camp in the rainforest.

  7. Finish the descent to Mweka Gate through wet, muddy rainforest, collect your summit certificate, then drive an hour to Mweka Village where transport picks you up for the journey back to Moshi.

What travellers actually say

Worth it if you're committed to summiting and want genuinely attentive guides who monitor your health obsessively. Think twice if you need hand-holding through logistics before arrival.

  • Guides do twice-daily health checks, O2 readings, and catch small problems before they become summit-threatening issues.
  • Porters deliver your duffel bags to camp before you arrive every single day; chef provides abundant, varied meals with second servings.
  • Solo female traveller felt genuinely supported and safe throughout; guides provided constant company and encouragement during difficult moments.
  • Pre-trek logistics handled well by company, but reviews don't detail costs, acclimatisation schedule specifics, or what altitude sickness support actually includes.
