About this trip
This trip takes you through Flores and the Komodo Islands, away from Indonesia's more visited spots and into a slower, rougher-edged part of the country.
You'll trek up Mt Kelimutu for sunrise over its coloured crater lakes, wander spiderweb-shaped rice terraces, and spend a night in the remote highland village of Wae Rebo. From there it's two days sailing through the Komodo Islands, with a hike up for views over the archipelago, a swim at Pink Beach, and a chance to see Komodo dragons in their own habitat.
It's a trip that rewards a bit of patience with travel days and basic rooms, in exchange for genuine access to a part of Indonesia that still feels unpolished.
What you'll do
- Hike to Mt Kelimutu for sunrise over the crater lakes
- Soak in the Mengeruda Hot Springs
- Stay overnight in the remote village of Wae Rebo
- Walk the spiderweb rice terraces
- Sail two days through the Komodo Islands
- Swim at Pink Beach and see Komodo dragons up close
- Long, bumpy travel days by private transport are part of the trip — roads are rough in places
- Accommodation in Flores is basic compared with Bali, with some multi-share rooms and no hot water on certain nights
- You'll need to be a confident swimmer for the snorkelling, and reasonably fit with proper footwear for the treks

What's included
- Guide: All group trips are accompanied by one of our group leader or local representative. The aim of the group leader or local representative is to take the hassle out of your travels and to help you have the best trip possible. Intrepid endeavours to provide the services of an experienced group leader or local representative however, due to the seasonality of travel, rare situations may arise where your group leader or local representative is new to a particular region or training other group leader or local representative. Your group leader or local representative will provide information on the places you are travelling through, offer suggestions for things to do and see, recommend great local eating venues and introduce you to our local friends. While not being guides in the traditional sense, you can expect them to have a broad general knowledge of the places visited on the trip, including historical, cultural, religious, and social aspects. At Intrepid we aim to support local guides who have specialised knowledge of the regions we visit. If you are interested in delving deeper into the local culture at a specific site or location then your group leader or local representative can recommend a local guide service in most of the main destinations of your trip.

- Guide Nova was excellent; Fred showed great promise. Team leaders attentive to details, friendly, and knowledgeable.
- Variety of activities and experiences other travellers never get. Well-organised itinerary with genuine adventure value.
- Itinerary changes happen mid-trip with poor communication. Customer service inconsistent; felt like a number, not a person.
- Heavy van travel between destinations. Long days required, but necessary to access remote, worthwhile locations.
