About this trip

This 12-day trek takes you into the heart of the Annapurna range, walking trails that pass through Gurung villages, terraced rice fields, and thick rhododendron forest before reaching the base of Annapurna itself.

The route builds gradually, so you get closer views of peaks over 7,000 and 8,000 metres without needing technical climbing experience. Along the way you cross suspension bridges over mountain rivers and stay in villages where daily life still runs on farming and herding.

It's a fully guided group trek with road transfers at each end, and the trail is well established with teahouses offering hot showers and varied menus, so the nights are more comfortable than you might expect at altitude.

What you'll do

  • Walk through Gurung villages and terraced hillside farms
  • Trek through rhododendron and oak forest
  • Cross suspension bridges over glacial rivers
  • Reach Annapurna Base Camp and spend the night there
  • Take in views of Machhapuchre (Fishtail) and the Annapurna massif
  • Eat traditional Nepalese daal-bhat along the trail
Good to know
  • Moderate pace suited to a wide range of ages, from children to older adults
  • Heavy snowfall between January and mid-February can close the trail
  • Teahouse accommodation throughout, with hot showers available

  1. Land at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu and get collected by your Oriental Journeys rep, who'll take you to a hotel in Thamel. There's a briefing on the trek ahead and you'll meet your guide before settling in for the night.

  2. Your guide picks you up for a six-hour drive to Pokhara by tourist bus, passing terraced fields and rural villages. Spend the evening wandering around Phewa Lake, one of Pokhara's main draws, then stay overnight at a hotel.

  3. Drive to Nayapul and trek to Ghandruk (1940m/6360 ft) 5 - 6 hours trek — Naya Pul

Drive to Nayapul via the village of Lumle, then start trekking. The path drops steeply before following a stone-paved trail high above the river to Birethanti, through bamboo forests and past waterfalls. Stop for lunch in the small village of Sudami, then climb steadily to reach Ghandruk and your lodge.

  4. Trek from Ghandruk to Chhomrong after breakfast, surrounded by Gurung communities, their culture, and the hospitality the area's known for. The day offers chances to engage with local villagers and stay at a lodge in Chhomrong.

  5. Leave Chhomrong via 2,500 stone steps, cross a swaying suspension bridge over Chhomrong Khola, then push uphill through forest near Sinuwa to Kuldihar before an easy downhill finish to Bamboo. Sleep at a tea house here.

  6. Walk through damp bamboo forest with views of the glacial river, passing Hinku Cave on the way. The trail climbs to Deurali, where you'll see dramatic vertical rock faces and cascading waterfalls before overnight.

  7. Climb gently through a river bed then tackle steep mountainside trails to Machhapuchhre Base Camp, with views of Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, Annapurna I, III and other peaks. Continue up to Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m) for the night.

  8. Photograph the mountains at sunrise, then retrace your steps back down to Bamboo—a straightforward downhill walk with sweeping landscape views to keep you company. Stay at Bamboo again.

  9. Trek to Jhinu Danda — Chhomrong

Spend the day on up-and-down terrain: uphill from Bamboo to Kuldihar, downhill to Chhomrong Khola, up to Chhomrong, then down to Jhinu Danda. Finish with a soak in the hot springs before bed at your lodge.

  10. Trek down to Siwai in three hours, then drive back to Pokhara. If time allows, visit local sites and have dinner at a lakeside restaurant before staying overnight.

  11. Drive back to Kathmandu after breakfast, passing rivers and grassland on the scenic route. Check into your hotel for the night.

  12. Your final day: eat breakfast, then Oriental Journeys drops you at the airport three hours before your flight. It's goodbye from the team, with hopes you'll return to Nepal another time.

What travellers actually say

Worth it if you're fit enough for high altitude and value expert guides. Think twice if you need private bathrooms or dislike basic lodge conditions.

  • Guides consistently excellent: Aneel, Nabin, Layu named for patience, expertise, attentiveness to safety and comfort.
  • Views of Annapurna and Fishtail genuinely spectacular; weather luck matters but trekkers got stunning, memorable scenery.
  • Accommodations basic: no private bathrooms, shared facilities standard. Acceptable for rest after days, not luxury.
  • Altitude manageable for first-timers if reasonably fit; guides recommend ginger tea, hydration, soup for acclimatisation support.
