About this trip

This 9-day trip takes you up Kilimanjaro via the Rongai Route, the only path that approaches the mountain from the north. It's the quietest way up, crossing wild, unspoiled terrain with far fewer climbers around you than on the busier routes.

Starting near the Kenya border, you climb up through changing landscapes with close views of Mawenzi Volcano, Kilimanjaro's second-highest peak, and the wide saddle that connects it to Kibo. You summit via Gilman's Point on the Marangu route, then descend the same way.

Getting to the start point involves a long drive to reach the park, since permits are issued through the Marangu gate. Accommodation and transport throughout are included.

What you'll do

  • Trek the quiet, less-crowded Rongai Route from Kilimanjaro's northern side
  • Views of Mawenzi Volcano and the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo
  • Start the climb near the Kenya border
  • Summit via Gilman's Point on the Marangu route
  • Descend via the Marangu route
Good to know
  • A long drive to the park is needed to pass through the Marangu gate for permits
  • Longer treks on this route (closer to 7 days) are recommended for better acclimatization

  1. Arrive in Kilimanjaro international airport — Kilimanjaro

Land at Kilimanjaro International Airport and get a private transfer to your hotel in Moshi. There's a pre-climb briefing, equipment check, and confirmation of your travel insurance and medical cover before the trek begins.

  2. Drive to Nalemoru village (4 hours, including a permit stop at Marangu), then hike 6km through maize fields into pine forest. The track climbs gently through wildlife-rich woodland to Simba Camp at the moorland edge, with views across the Kenyan plains.

  3. Simba Camp to Second Cave — Second Caves Camp

A steady 6km climb to Second Cave Camp gains 800m over 3–4 hours through moorland. You'll get clear views of Kibo and its eastern ice fields on the crater rim.

  4. Cross moorland on a smaller path towards Mawenzi's jagged peaks, covering 9km in 2–3 hours across semi-desert. Kikelewa Camp sits in a sheltered valley with giant Senecios nearby.

  5. Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Turn Hut — Kikelewa Camp

A short but steep 6km climb through grassy slopes to Mawenzi Turn Hut at 4330m. The camp sits spectacularly in a cirque beneath Mawenzi's towering spires; the afternoon is free to rest or acclimatise with an optional hike around Mawenzi.

  6. Cross the lunar 'Saddle' between Mawenzi and Kibo through alpine desert, covering 9km in 4–5 hours to reach Kibo Hut at 4750m. Rest here before the summit push, which begins very early tomorrow.

  7. Kibo Camp to Summit and Horombo Hut — Kibo Huts

Start at midnight and climb steep scree or snow 6km to Gilman's Point on the crater rim (5700m), then continue to Uhuru Peak—Africa's highest point at 5895m. Descend 15km to Horombo Hut, stopping for lunch and rest at Kibo. You'll need a headlamp for the dark start.

  8. Descend 20km from Horombo through moorland to Mandara Hut, then through lush forest to Marangu Gate. A vehicle collects you for the drive back to Moshi. You can relax at your hotel, pursue an optional safari extension, or prepare to leave.

  9. Depart for your next destination. A vehicle will take you to the airport at your chosen time, whether you're starting a safari, flying to Zanzibar, or heading home.
