About this trip
The Machame route is one of the tougher paths up Kilimanjaro, chosen by over half of climbers despite being steeper and more demanding than the neighbouring Marangu route. Over 9 days, you camp your way up through a genuine range of habitats, with the terrain changing dramatically as you gain altitude.
This is a route for people who want more of a challenge and more scenery in return. Expect long days and steep sections, and previous hiking experience will help you handle it.
An extra night at Karanga Valley is built in to ease the pace and improve your chances of reaching the summit, with the descent taking two days once you're up.
What you'll do
- Climb through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert and glacial zones
- Spot monkeys in the forest sections lower down
- Pass lava towers and crater scenery on the higher slopes
- Camp at Karanga Valley to acclimatise before the summit push
- Reach the summit after four days of ascent
- Descend over two days back down the mountain
- Steeper and more physically demanding than the Marangu route
- Previous hiking experience is a real advantage here
- All camping, with accommodation and transport included throughout
