About this trip

An 8-day self-guided trek through the Julian Alps, with 6 days spent moving hut to hut from Kranjska Gora to Tolmin in the Soča Valley. You're on foot through high passes, alpine meadows and valleys, with Mount Triglav dominating the skyline for much of the route.

This is a serious trekking itinerary rather than a gentle walking holiday — expect long days at altitude and terrain that demands a reasonable level of fitness and hillwalking experience. Nights are spent in rustic mountain huts, eating simple mountain food and sleeping in shared dormitory-style rooms typical of the Julian Alps hut network.

It's self-guided, so you move at your own pace with route notes rather than a guide walking alongside you, and there's an option to tackle Mount Triglav itself if you want the extra challenge.

What you'll do

  • Trek hut to hut across the Julian Alps from Kranjska Gora to Tolmin
  • Walk the flanks and valleys around Mount Triglav
  • Visit Triglav National Park and the Triglav Lakes Valley
  • Climb Mount Krn (2,244m), a notable WWI-era peak
  • Explore the Tolmin Gorges
  • Optional ascent of Mount Triglav (2,864m), the highest peak in the Julian Alps
Good to know
  • Self-guided — you navigate the route yourself using provided notes, not with a walking guide
  • Physically demanding, with high passes and multiple consecutive trekking days, best suited to experienced hikers
  • Accommodation is in mountain huts, so expect basic, shared facilities rather than private rooms

What travellers actually say

Worth it if you're a confident hiker comfortable with exposed terrain. Think twice if you need solo rooms or are new to mountain trekking.

  • Scenery is genuinely stunning and hut food ranges from good to superb throughout.
  • Requires solid hiking experience; unstable footing and exposed cliffs aren't for beginners.
  • Mountain hut dorms mean shared sleeping with snoring and noise—budget accommodation reality.
  • Staff are genuinely responsive and helpful before, during, and after the trek.
