About this trip

This is a six-day climb of Kilimanjaro via the Rongai Route, approaching from the quieter north side near the Kenyan border. You sleep in tents rather than huts, with porters pitching camp and meals served in a dinner tent or on a blanket outside.

The route is generally considered more scenic than Marangu and gentler than Machame, which helps with acclimatisation and success rates. You join the Marangu path for the final summit push, then descend the southeast side, so you get a good spread of views of the mountain from different angles.

It's a proper trek rather than a technical climb, but six days on Kilimanjaro is on the shorter end, so this suits people who are fit, realistic about altitude, and want an efficient route to the top rather than the longest possible acclimatisation window.

What you'll do

  • Trek the Rongai Route on Kilimanjaro's less-travelled north side
  • Sleep in tents pitched by porters each night
  • Eat meals in a dinner tent or outdoors with mountain views
  • Join the Marangu Route for the summit climb
  • Descend via the southeast side for different views of the mountain
Good to know
  • A shorter six-day itinerary — a longer 7-day version exists if you want more acclimatisation time
  • Camping throughout, not hut-based like the Marangu route
  • Fitness and altitude readiness matter more given the compressed schedule

Route map for Kilimanjaro climb rongai route
  1. Drive from Moshi to Rongai Gate, then trek through montane forest and cypress plantations for five hours to First Caves Camp. The gradual path offers chances to spot colobus monkeys, and porters will have your tent ready and dinner waiting when you arrive at 2,600m.

  2. Climb six to seven hours through moorland to Kikelelwa Cave at 3,600m, stopping en route at the second cave camp for lunch. Porters set up your tent and provide hot water and refreshments; the extra day on this route helps with acclimatisation.

  3. Short three to four hour trek from Kikelelwa Cave to Mawenzi Tarn Camp at 4,330m. The camp sits in a hollow beneath Mawenzi's sharp peak near a small lake; spend the afternoon resting and exploring the dramatic moorland terrain.

  4. Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330 m) – Kibo Hut (4,700 m) — Mawenzi Tarn Camp

Cross the stark lunar landscape of the Saddle between the two peaks to reach Kibo Hut at 4,700m. Four to five hours walking; the rest of the day involves preparing mentally and physically for tomorrow's summit attempt with an early night.

  5. Summit Attempt. Kibo Hut (4,700 m) – Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) – Horombo Hut (3,720 m) — Kibo Huts

Wake around 11pm for the summit push. Trek through rough, rocky terrain past Williams Point, Hans Meyer Cave and Gillman's Point on the crater rim, reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895m after eight hours. Descend six hours to Horombo Hut, covering 21km down.

  6. Final six-hour descent from Horombo Hut past Mandara Hut to Marangu Gate, then transfer to Moshi. Register at the gate and collect your summit certificate—green for Gillman's Point, gold diploma for Uhuru Peak—followed by celebrations and crew tips.

What travellers actually say

Worth it if you want attentive guides, decent food, and solitude on the climb. Think twice if you dislike very long summit days—midnight to 3pm with minimal rest.

  • Guides consistently check acclimatisation daily and actively support you toward the summit with genuine care.
  • Rongai stays quiet with only 4 groups on route until Stella Point, far less crowded than other routes.
  • Summit day is brutal: midnight start, summit reached, back to Kibo Hut, small rest, then descent to Horombo until 3pm.
  • Cook and crew quality genuinely exceeds typical mountain food expectations; hot water bottles provided for sleeping bags.
